Thermostat Replacement / An Upgrade That Pays Off

Many homeowners still have the thermostat that came with their house 10 or more years ago. We all know how fast technology changes and boosts the efficiency and safety of many household items that we take for granted. Take a look at some of the reasons a thermostat upgrade is a great low-cost investment that pays big dividends.

Digital Thermostats

  • A newer, digital thermostat is safer. That's because older non-digital thermostats contain one of the highest levels of mercury found in household objects.
  • Digital thermostats are eco-friendly, helping to reduce the 6-8 tons of mercury that ends up in our landfills every year.
  • Because they have no moving parts, there's no reason to have to call a technician in for repairs or calibration.
  • Digital thermostats are programmable. That means you can start warming up the house for breakfast and a shower while you're still fast asleep, or turn on the air conditioning in the summer before you get home from work so the house is nice and cool when you arrive.
  • The biggest benefit from a digital thermostat is the fact that it saves energy, resulting in real money savings -- in some cases up to $200 per year.

Wi-Fi Enabled Thermostats

A wi-fi enabled thermostat makes your life easier. They're a little more expensive than a digital model, but at the end of the day, the savings will come back to you. Here are the benefits -- see for yourself:

  • Set the thermostat from the office (or anywhere else) for the exact temperature you want your house to be when you arrive home.
  • They're smart-device compatible. You can use your smart phone, tablet, laptop or pc to set your home's temperature on the fly.
  • A wi-fi thermostat gives you updates and alerts about the maintenance of the connected devices, like telling you when it's time to change a filter, for example. This helps things run more productively for maximum efficiency.
  • Wi-fi thermostats offer precision temperature control and real dollar savings, averaging around $250 per year, depending on your individual circumstances.

How to Save Money on Air Conditioning Repair

When you think about hiring a professional for air conditioning repair, you might instantly think about spending a lot of money. However, there are ways that you can cut costs on this necessary service.

Keep Up With Maintenance

First of all, it's important to keep up with your air conditioning system's maintenance at all times. Failing to do something as simple as replacing an air filter can contribute to problems with your system, which can result in the need for costly repairs.

Let Your Warranty Cover It

If your unit is newer, it might still be under warranty. Check to see if repairs will be covered by the warranty before you shell out your own cash for them.

Avoid After-Hours Calls

Knowing that HVAC companies often offer 24-hour emergency service can provide peace of mind, and in some situations, you might need it. However, if the weather is relatively mild and you can get by with fans until regular business hours, you can save money on a costly after-hours service call.

Don't Wait Until the Last Minute

Putting off repairs can be more costly in the long run, even though there's a chance that you might do it simply because you don't have the extra cash to spend. Simple problems can become more serious with time, so as soon as you notice even a minor issue with your unit, it's smart to seek professional assistance immediately.

As you can see, there are several ways that you can save money on air conditioning repair. If you are looking for an HVAC company that you can count on, contact us at Green Leaf A/C and Heating. Not only do we offer reliable services, but our prices are surprisingly reasonable, too!

3 Fantastic Reasons for an HVAC Commercial Maintenance Plan

Small business owners know the importance of keeping all of their equipment up to par. Whether it’s small appliances that are used for the direct profit or larger appliances such as the HVAC system, it all impacts the bottom line. When the machinery is running smoothly, then the business can operate efficiently, customers are content, and the profits keep rolling in. However, when a breakdown occurs, everything halts – including the income. For small business owners, this can wreak havoc. A commercial HVAC maintenance plan is a key to ensuring your equipment keeps on track. Just how does a maintenance plan benefit your bottom line as a business owner?

Preventive maintenance saves money

Catching problems before they become major will save you a lot of money. When you have a regular maintenance plan with a reputable A/C contracting company, they will become familiar with your system and be quick to detect problems while they are still small. Fixing a small problem is much simpler and less expensive than dealing with a larger problem.

Ensure great air quality in your business

Air quality is directly impacted by the cleanliness of your filters, coils, and condensers —all of which are quick to collect dirt. For the best air quality, your A/C contractor will regularly clean these components, or as in the case of the filter, s/he will change it.

Relationships put you first in line, plus more

When your unit is not working properly, your business is in need of prompt service. There is no time to be hunting through a list of names in hopes of finding a contractor reliable, experienced, licensed, and available right away. When you enter into a commercial maintenance agreement plan, you develop a relationship with contractors who do the work on your unit. Therefore, when problems arise, you are sure to get speedy help. And, it’s a comfort knowing, the individuals coming to work on your unit are already familiar with it.

At Green Leaf A/C and Heating, we offer commercial and residential maintenance plans. For more information about this topic, please contact us today!

Essential and Effective Tips for Indoor Air Quality Improvement

The quality of the air in your home is essential when it comes to your family's health and well-being. However, you could be wondering what you can do to improve indoor air quality. Luckily, following these tips can help.

Stop Wearing Shoes in the House

First and foremost, encourage your family members to stop wearing shoes in the house. Doing so can allow you to bring in pollen and other debris from outdoors, which can affect indoor air quality. Plus, cutting down on wearing shoes in the house can also make household clean-up a whole lot easier.

Get Into a Dusting Routine

Dusting isn't known as being a favorite household chore. However, ensuring that you dust on a regular basis can help you cut down on dust and dander that floats around your home. Consider getting into a routine to ensure that this essential job is being done.

Skip Using Harsh Chemicals for Cleaning

Be careful about using harsh cleaning chemicals, air fresheners and other chemical-laden products. Instead, use natural products when you can to help prevent indoor air quality issues.

Keep Your HVAC System Well-Maintained

If your HVAC system isn't properly maintained, it could be dirty and dusty, which could affect your indoor air quality. Having your unit maintained on a regular basis can help prevent it from negatively affecting your indoor air quality and can help ensure that it works efficiently and effectively, too.

Change Your Filters Often

For indoor air quality improvement, make sure that you change your filters often. You can even purchase a specific air filter that is designed for indoor air quality improvement, such as one that is designed for people who have allergies.

Consider an Air Purifier or UV Lamp

There are specific air purifiers and UV lamps out there that are designed specifically for improving indoor air quality. If you are unsure of which system to choose, consider talking to your HVAC technician about your options.

As you can see, there are steps that you can take to improve your home's indoor air quality. For additional tips or for all of your HVAC-related needs, contact us at Green Leaf A/C and Heating today.

Air Conditioner Replacement or Repair - Weigh Your Options

As with any mechanical equipment, there will come a time when replacement of your HVAC system is smarter than repair. Think of this decision as you would replacing or repairing an automobile.

In 1999, the GMC Hummer was the hottest vehicle to own. Gasoline was $1.30 per gallon. The world had not quite absorbed the idea of going green and excessiveness was considered a sign of prosperity. If the Hummer needed a battery or a set of tires, it made sense. But, by 2010 gasoline was nearly $3.00 per gallon. Parts were beginning to wear on the Hummer and by then people were very concerned about their impact on the environment.

The average life of a central air conditioner is 10-15 years. In the late 1990’s, a unit with a 10 SEER rating was considered high efficiency.  By 2005, the laws had changed and the 13 SEER unit was the lowest rated unit that could be made.  This translates to it cost more to operate a unit made 2005 than it does in 2016. The refrigerant used in air conditioners made before 2004 was R22. That refrigerant has been phased out. Keeping an old air conditioner is much like holding on to a Hummer.  Here are some factors to consider in this decision:

  • How old is the unit?
  • How much money are you spending annually to keep it operational?
  • Is it outdated and therefore costing significantly more to provide fuel for the unit?
  • Are there special terms available making the purchase a wise one?

The intelligent property will consult a professional to help them see all of their options. Call today and let an expert inspect your system and help you decide if now is the correct time to replace.  Your reward is lower utility costs, a more comfortable home, and cleaner air quality.
